The "Catch Us If You Can Plan"

The snow this week in Lexington caught most people off guard. Normally, the snow around here is the soft, light, melt-in-30-mins-of-good-sun-type-snow. This time it was packable, make-a-snow-man-type-stuff.

On Monday, LexTran went into "Snow Plan" though I think it would more fittingly named "Catch us if you can Plan". The busses begin running on these bizarre routes. They sometimes ride streets that they normally do not, so some of the "Snow Plan" routes do not have bus stops on them. So the bus must be flagged if you want on.

This is a huge safety risk. Take for example a street with no curb in some portions and also no sidewalks in other portions. Dangerous!

Many cities like Atlanta and Washington, DC had to cancel public transportation mid-day during storms and let riders stranded to get home as best they could. So the fact that LexTran tried to keep up is commendable.

HOWEVER, the question that must be asked is how is the public notified that busses have gone into "SNOW PLAN" and how do people know what the heck that even is. With all the empty advertising space on LexTran, why not print up some cards that explain the "SNOW PLAN" and where to get a copy. I've never gotten one when I get routes and schedules from downtown. I only found it online. More rider education is due and more feedback is required to make improvements to the "Catch Me If You Can Plan" of LexTran.

Yellow train going to China Town? Uhhh-Nope!

In this hilariously sad story out of Atlanta, MARTA officials ignored the warning of thier "diversity" officer who told them that it would be a bad idea to name the train going into a predominately Asian community "Yellow".

After national media attention, it is now being changed to "Gold", reportedly the most cost effective rememdy.

The sad piece to this entire thing is that MARTA has someone on board who has the job of thinking about race all the time and they just ignored them. I want to know how this came up in a meeting and no said, "Maybe you're right." Who the hell thought this would fly?

This is a waste of taxpayers money on so many levels...the wasted salary of the diversity officer...the reprinting of signage and schedules...the PR campaign to get out of it....way to WASTE Atlanta!

Response: Though I did not get an email response, when I went online on Tuesday, February 9 I was pleasantly suprised to see an updated 2S schedule that was effective FEBRUARY 8, 2010. Whoo-Hoo! That is a same day response in my book since I'm sure Ms. Barnett was not working over the weekend.

Information on the Bus Stop Challenge

Found this information about an artist competition:

Art in Motion, in association with Aylesford Place Neighborhood Association, the University of Kentucky and LexTran, is offering a $2000 design prize/commission for design of a unique transit shelter to serve LexTran riders and University of Kentucky students. The shelter will serve both as bus stop with seating and shelter for riders and as public art that incorporates living plants.

The shelter should provide visual stimulation that draws the eye away from the surrounding electric utility lines and poles.

Professional architects, engineers, landscape designers, sculptors and artists are eligible. Students under the supervision of relevant professionals are also eligible.

A cash prize of $2,000 will be awarded for the winning design. The prize will be awarded to the selected winner upon delivery of detailed construction drawings of the winning design and completion of shelter fabrication. The selected winner shall be responsible for reasonable communication with chosen fabricator needed to ensure correct interpretation of design drawings and successful fabrication of design.

The total budget for materials and construction of structure and planting is $17,500

But I was thinking: On one hand I like any idea that brings seating for riders. But on the other hand, I don't know if I want to have people coming by snapping pics of the bus stop and me on it LOL. Great idea though...way to go Art In Motion!!!

In the January 2010 LexTran Newsletter posted here online, a convient program for seniors is outlined and the public is invited to share the information.

"One of LexTran’s communi ty out reach programs, LexConnects provides groups of senior citizens with transportation for mid-day social outings. Service must be scheduled in advance and a minimum of 10 riders are required to reserve trips. This service is offered Monday through Friday, from 10 am to 1pm. Rides are only fifty cents each way for riders 62 and older, and service may be scheduled by calling 225-CONX."

I stand (self) corrected! (or How to figure out LexTran routes)

A couple posts back I was giving my constructive critique on how LexTran could improve ridership.

I said, and still stand by my statement ,that the routes are not clearly spelled out. However, I must correct something. LexTran does detail each route online...if you know how to find it.

How to get route descriptions:
Go to the LexTran website.
Then, click on "LexTran Routes"
When you see the bus number you want, look right for "description".
That is where the route details are and each street traveled is mentioned and transfer points identified.

But I found this online. When you ask for a schedule at the Transit Center, this information is not included. Thus the constant questioning of the driver.

Also, the bus schedules online are out of date. I know for a fact that I got a new schedule for the 2S and 3S busses that became effective in December 2009. The schedule for the 2S online says effective August 25, 2008.

Kentucky's current passenger rail opportunities are non-existent. Where is Amtrack anyway? It surely doesn't come anywhere near Lexington.

Considering how Lexington's bus system is not connected to any other city I think that if we plan to expand, we should think BIG and rail is BIG thinking.

Watch what candidate Dr. Dan has proposed and leave your comments! I've heard from The Streetsweeper that he plans to come to Lexington to talk about it soon.

Get Involved in Lexingtons Transportation Planning

I really thought that I had done a post about the Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).

A major aspect of their planning involves transportation. They have a great website that details their planning.

One thing I noticed is that they do really loooooooong term planning. They have a 25 year plan for Lexington's transportation that is through the year 2030.

What that says to me is that public input along the way will be critical to keeping their perspective fresh.

Making people WANT to ride LexTran

How do you make people want to ride public transit?

Here's one. Make parking prices so high that you force it. That is what is happening in Downtown Lexington and I don't think it's a bad thing.

Right now, most meters are only 2 hours and the cost is $1 per hour. So the inconvenience of walking back to feed the meter on top of the cost makes riding the bus more enticing.

But Lexington has so much free parking, most people don't bother with meters. You can park in the Library or city lots free for hours with a validated ticket and validation is never challenged by the guards or desk people, they just stamp it and send you on your way.

I am amazed how every good plan for downtown includes a statement about "working on a deal with LexTran".

I don't think that people with cars are skipping the bus due to the $1 fare.

People don't ride it because the ride is long into downtown if you live outside New Circle Rd. and the schedules are too difficult to read. It took a casual conversation with another rider for me to realize that the 3S goes down Lansdowne on the weekend. The bus schedule says that the bus stops at Crossroads Shopping Ctr. Well depending on how you look at it, Crossroads is on Nicholasville Rd. but according to LexTran it's on Reynolds Rd. and how would I know that the bus went down Lansdowne first?

So for the record I've offered 3 ways to increase ridership.

1. Increase downtown parking prices.
2. Reduce number of downtown parking spaces.
3. Make route details more clear.

You can learn a lot by attending board meetings around town. They are all open to the public, unless in closed session.

The Airport Board and LexTran Board in Lexington should both be of concern to riders of mass transit. These two groups meeting regularly and discuss a lot issues that effect your daily life. There is always time alloted for public comment. You can make one, or not. It's not a requirement for you to tell them who you are and why you're there. If you want to comment, you may be required to give your name and address, like at council meetings. But if you want to go, just do it. I'm sure you'll feel really empowered just by attending.

What you should know:
1. There is always and agenda and you should ask for one.
2. Some meetings are in very small rooms and the table is reserved for board members. You should always sit somewhere along the wall or in an obvious seating area, unless invited to join the table.
3. Remember you are a guest and should not bring noisy or smelly food and drinks.
4. Turn off your cell phone before entering.
5. Bring pen and paper to take notes.

So I have a confession....it's been too darn cold to ride the bus.

I miss riding but hey, if given the chance for warmth and reliability I'm riding in an automobile.

I am thankful to have a choice and realize it is not an option for most serial riders. But I mentioned this because I am not someone who rides as a hobby. I ride for my own reasons and I don't ride for my own reasons. But my commitment to public transit is real and will be real necessary for Lexington to move forward with any deliberate speed.

I love a movement! Just like the BRU in Los Angeles, New York has The Straphangers. According to thier website they work to as a watchdog group to keep the trains safe and affordable for all.

Spend some time reading about them.

I'd join a group like this in Lexington for sure. This city is too slow to change. The crisis management style, which can barely be called reactionary, is a failure in many areas and public transportation and road improvements are suffering.

We need two groups. A group that advocates for sidewalks (ever try to walk on Nicholasville Rd between Southland and New Circle Rd. or risk your life on Wilson Downing between Lansdowne and N'ville?) and bike lanes and then a group that advocates for more buses with shorter routes so trip time can be cut.

Hey Riders!

Play it safe this New Year's Eve and ride the bus or train. Cities like Chicago and Los Angeles are offering free or penny rides on Thursday evening until Friday morning.

A quick Google search with "your transportation company name" + "new year's eve" will tell you what is going on in your city.

Of course, LexTran in Lexington is not running on New Year's Day so you're on your own there riders!

I wonder how many people take advantage of the free rides and how rowdy the riders are after partying? Hmmm...

Mexico City bus system improves and gets Harvard honor

Here is an article I found where it details why Harvard honored a Mexico City bus system.

It seems that they added express lanes on a heavily traveled avenue that resulted in tremendous pollution reduction.

This project was a public/private partnership, which is becoming more and more popular as local and state governments have fewer dollars due to the massive job losses. (FYI...job loss = tax loss).

Mongiardo has a plan for Kentucky mass transit

What's interesting to me is that so few people are concerned with transportation, unless you're talking to them about thier personal vehicle. When was the last time that a candidate won or lost an election based on thier plan or lack of plan for mass/public transit? People generally don't care, so politicians don't.

Below is some information that I read on The Street Sweepers Blog. Current Kentucky Lt. Gov. Dr. Dan Mongiardo is running for Senator and has offered the following plan as part of his campaign. In the following presentation he privy's the reader to the fact that a portion of our tax dollars are being sent from Kentucky to Washington, DC for a national transportation fund. What is interesting is that Mongiardo says that only a small percent makes it back to the state and that is the fault of our Senators.

I'm curious to know why he is making this a campaign issue. If he is not personally motivated, I doubt that this will be more than words on a website.

This is something I'm going to look more into and let you know what else I can find out. Street Sweeper posted that the Mongiardo campaign is interested in speaking to Lexington. I wonder how many people came to his speech there. Whatever the number, reduce it by half for the number who will attend in Lexington. I'd like to see how we can work to connect Lexington and Louisville in addition to connecting Lexington to Cincinnati which is what is shown in the diagrams on the website. I don't like to see money pouring out of the state and that is what would happen since getting to Cincy would be so easy.

I'll post any meeting info here and on Twitter when I find out.

Anticipating the new rate hike Toronto riders have begun to hoard tokens. They are buying the train tokens in bulk and the transit officials project that they won't see some of the tokens until 2010. This could cost them to lose more than $1 million of projected revenue from the increase.

A few posts back, I mentioned that Lexington would benefit from a regional transit plan.

Well, to my surprise, I found this old article that says that a dedicated bus lane from Lexington to Nicholasville has been suggested.

While they're at it, they need a dedicated bus lane on Nicholasville Rd. going ALL THE WAY DOWNTOWN. What good is riding the bus, if it is stuck in traffic just like you are in a car?

We'll watch this and hopefully provide updates for the next Small Area Plan meetings on this.

A bus, a shuttle and a van

That is how many vehicles it took to get me and my daughter to Wal-Mart on Nicholasville Rd. last Friday!

So, it's Friday and we get on the bus. As soon as I step on the driver asks if I'm going to Fayette Mall or Wal-Mart. I say, "Wal-Mart" and he tells me that the bus is going to turn right at Nicholasville Rd. at Wilson Downing instead of left and go nearly two miles away from Wal-Mart to K-Mart. He says, just get off and get on the support shuttle and it will take you back.

Oh great! Thanks for adding another 15 mins to my trip. But, I'm not in a rush, so no big whoop so I thought. So now, I've been on a bus and a shuttle and am doing a little shopping.

I leave the store and go to the bus stop and wait, and wait, and wait. An hour later, around the time my fingers begin losing feeling and my daughter begins asking if we should just call Daddy to come get us, a bus comes. Of course it is not mine.

As it pulls off, here comes a LexTran van. He rolls down the window and says to the pack of us huddling together for heat, "You going down Tates Creek? Get in!"

Luckily there were others there or I might have gone back in the building and called for a ride. But it was a real LexTran van, with a real driver with ID and a blaring walkie talkie. He said, the busses were running so slow he was sent out to support the support shuttles.
WTH?

At first I thought, "Wow! How nice!" As a Serial Rider who has rode mass transit in many a city, I've never gotten free van service.

But then I thought, how much money are we wasting right here? LexTran and Lexington have to do something about the Nicholasville Rd. holiday traffic. It is ridiculous and obviously expensive because neither the support shuttle nor the support van took money from us.

Central Kentucky needs a regional transit system

I got up to catch the 2S bus to do some Black Friday shopping around Nicholasville Rd. this morning. The earliest bus that come through the neighborhoods gets you to the Southpark Wal-Mart at 7 a.m. (if it's on time) On the bus were mostly workers. You could tell by their uniforms and shoes and lunch bags.

Two men had a brief conversation that I happened to catch. It went something like this:
Male 1: Hey Man! How was your turkey?
Male 2: It was alright, I had to work all day.
Male 1: Yeah, it's like that sometime.
Male 2: Cracker Barrel was really busy. This is my stop, see you later.

He exited at the Mickey D's just inside Man O War on Nicholasville Rd. Another man said, "Is he walking to Cracker Barrel?" I said, "That's a looooong way down from here."

Let's put some facts on this conversation: According to the address of Mickey D's and CB, I found that they are 2.5 miles apart.

Now that's pretty bad. There is obviously not enough work within the city limits and now people are forced to take jobs more than 2 miles off the bus routes.
What's even funnier, is that there are Express busses at the WalMart in Southpark just a block from where he got off. People are allowed to park in the parking lot for free and ride into Downtown Lexington from there. But they have to drive to that point.

Why can't there be a shuttle bus to get them from Nicholasville to Lexington and the reverse? Even just a few times each day. The system must not be convenient or it is not well advertised, because on early mornings you see hundreds of cars with one rider going down Nicholasville Rd. toward UK and downtown Lex. What a waste of gas and oxygen!

A regional transit system would bring ease to workers, job seekers and shoppers. I'm sure that Nicholasville and Georgetown shoppers would love an easy ride into Lexington for some retail therapy. I'm going to see if there was ever regional transit here and if not, why not?

A quick Google search of "impact of regional transit" gave several pages of interesting reading on the subject.

There has to be some other means of providing affordable and responsible transportation options to those who work or live outside Lexington.

This meal is free and LexTran is providing rides if you can get to any of the three pick up/drop off points.

Busses do not run on Thanksgiving so it make be a bit tricky to get to the points, but its a great thing to see this holiday season!

They are reviving the Miss G Train contest. No, I'm not kidding. Here's the proof.

According to the article it's about pride and how much people connect with the train in their borough. I sort of get that. As a rider, I get to recognize faces that ride the same time as me. This is most def a NY thing though. There are few American cities where riding public transit is for the masses and not "those people".

What's sooooo New York about this pic is that no one notices her modeling on the train. LOL

Riders could lose shelters due to economy

This right here is some ISH to me.

In Osceola, FL the bus shelters were put in by a marketing company that sells advertising space on them. Well, now they owe the city money and had to strike a deal to keep the shelters in.

What a shame that the riders are the ones hanging in limbo over this. What if a deal had not been reached. I really think that cities need to provide several areas with benches, shelters, etc. I think shelters should be built into budgets just the printing of routes, maintenance on buses, trains, etc. I think shelters are a right of fare paying riders, do you?

I think that this is such a great idea. American's are the only ones who look at mass transit as "beneath" us. We've gotten so sick with it that now celebs are joining clubs to use private jets because they don't want to be seen with "the rest of us". How wasteful is that?

This is one the initiatives of Pres. Obama that NEEDS to make it to fruition. I would use it a LOT. Where I am in Kentucky, Amtrak doesn't even service. My only non-driving options are Greyhound and air. It's a waste to fly for 50 mins. to Detroit or Chicago but rail, I'd do. But only HIGH SPEED. Once I caught the train from Chicago and Detroit and there were kids on bikes beside the train moving faster than we were in several areas.

Instead of bailing out the auto industry, lets create a new mass transit industry!

What say you about high speed rail? Would you support it? Would you mind tax dollars being spent on it?

Transit drivers and phones

This is one big no-no! Driving a car is hard enough, but wielding a huge bus or train while on the phone is too much.

I got onto a bus Friday night and the driver was on the phone and there was only one other person on the bus. Neither of us said anything, but I have to admit that I was reluctant to report it since he was a "brother". But I am over that now and am making a written complaint about it.

This story is about a NY bus driver who was already being disciplined for photographing riders and posting to Facebook. Now he hits and kills someone. He was not texting at the time but he is obviously not a safe driver. I hope he is taken of the job.

Can you imagine being on this doggone bus? A real rider knows you wouldn't just get off, the next bus could be an hour coming! I'd just join hands and bow my head, keep BOTH eyes open, say Amen! and ride to my destination!
